During 2014 the 24th consecutive Old Mutual Om die Dam Ultra Marathon will be run. The race is run under the rules of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Athletics North-West North (ANWN).

Age Categories

Minimum age for participation
Entrants must be no younger than 20 on the day of the race

Age Category Runners
Age category tags must be clearly visible on the front and back of the running vest, if competitors are to be eligible for any age category prize apart from the open category. Proof of age may be requested by race referee upon race day. No identification of sponsors of individual athletes may appear on advertising inside the competition area. Advertising tattoos or any advertising marks on any part of the body is illegal.

License & Club

Club Colors/Running Gear
All runners must wear the clothes of the athletics club, they are a member of as indicated in their entry. Temporary licenses will be issued to participants not yet registered with a club.

Ultra Marathon T-Shirt

All entrants that have entered before the closing date will receive a limited edition, Old Mutual Om die Dam Ultra Marathon running T-shirt at the Finish of the race. Please ensure you indicate your CORRECT size on the entry form as NO EXCHANGES will be allowed at Registration.

Please bring a copy of your confirmation of entry with you when collecting your entry. In the case of someone else fetching your race registration pack, please give this person your confirmation printout.

Race Numbers

Runners will receive ONE race number. All runners must wear the official race number on the front of their vest. Neglecting to adhere to this rule will lead to disqualification. No race numbers are to be pinned on running shorts. It is imperative that runners fill in the information on their race numbers.

MISUSE of Race Numbers
Runners MAY NOT TRANSFER their race numbers to other runners. Any runner who is found guilty of breaking this rule will be banned from the race for 1 year in addition to them being disqualified from the current year.

ChampionChip Timing

This event is being timed with the ChampionChip system and therefore you are required to own a ChampionChip to participate in the event. To ensure that you are accurately recorded in the Race Results it is important that you are in possession of your ChampionChip that is correctly registered in your name. If you do not currently have a ChampionChip or want to verify that it is correctly registered, this can be done at www.championchip.co.za or by contacting ChampionChip Africa on 0861 100 963. Your ChampionChip code must be entered on your registration form. Your ChampionChip MUST be correctly attached to your shoe laces. For correct attachment instructions please visit www.championchip.co.za. No corrections or manual updates will be done due to incorrect use of the ChampionChip or not abiding by the race rules. No chip. No result. No prize.

Start & Parking

Start
Opposite Hartbeespoort High School grounds, Schoemansville, (Hartbeespoort). The start is at 06:00.

Parking
Various Parking areas are organized within walking distance from the start. Some of the schools and churches near the start will provide parking as well as along the R104 and in the open veld opposite the start. Athletes are advised to come early to avoid being late for the start. The general rule is to attempt to be at the venue at 04:30.

Tog Bag Facility

Runners can make use of the Tog Bag Truck that will be available at the start. Your tog bags will be taken for collection at the Finish after the race.

Runners must ensure that their bags are labeled with their names on the label provided at these trucks. Every care will be taken to ensure that the bags are safeguarded. However, runners are advised not to leave expensive or valuable items in their bags, as the organisers cannot accept responsibility for any losses.

Medical Assistance

A Medical Tent will be available at the venue next to the finish. There is a full support team on hand to deal with any emergency that may occur. A mobile crew is patrolling the route to deal with any major problems, supported by response vehicles, pickup vehicles and radio marshals to monitor your progress during the race. In the event of a problem on the route, you will be assisted. We have vehicles that patrol the route to assist those who are unable to complete the race and ensure they are returned to the finish safely.

There are a team of physiotherapists and first aiders to sooth those aching muscles at the Physio tent at the finish. Please feel free to visit the tent and have a welcome massage after your finish. The medical team is on hand for your safety – please enjoy the race, and we hope we do not have to see you!

Seconding

The NO MOBILE SECONDING rule will be strictly enforced. No seconds may drive, cycle or run alongside any athlete on the route. The STAND AND HAND rule, whereby a runner's seconds may stand at any refreshment station on the route and hand refreshments to their athlete while they remain stationary, will apply. No seconds may travel on the route.

The race referees will deal with any transgression of this rule and the penalty may include disqualification after a warning.

Finish Line

The finish line must be crossed to officially finish the race. At this point you will be timed by crossing the finish line. There are designated lanes and it is important to move through this area swiftly.

Ultra Route

The scenic Old Mutual Om die Dam Ultra Marathon route: Runners will veer off left onto the R104 crossing the Dam wall and passing under the Arch de Triumph. At Damdoryn the route turns left onto the R512 and over the first hill, Commando neck. After a while, still on the R512 the route goes left across the westerly point of the dam and left again past Peaconwood Golf Estate. At Broederstroom the R512 turns away towards Lanseria but the route continues straight onto the R104 past Pelindaba before turning left once again at the R511 intersection and onto the second of the significant hills, Saartjies Neck. After this the route heads on past Jasmyn Farm Stall and through the residential suburbs of Meerhof, Ifafi and Melodie before the finish at Schoemansville.

It is the responsibility of each runner to know the route of their race. Traffic Police and race marshals will take all reasonable steps to ensure runners safety, however runners are responsible for their own wellbeing at all times.

Route Profile

Marshals and Traffic Authorities

From the start runners will occupy the full width of the Main Road until Damdoryn (at the R512 & R104 intersection ± 5km), then will be moved to the left side of the road for the rest of the race. Please obey all marshals and traffic authorities.

Refreshment Stations

Nineteen well equipped refreshment stations along the route will ensure that every runners needs are adequately catered for.

A special station will be located at the start and the first station is at 3 km where only water and Coke will be available. The subsequent refreshment stations are approximately 3 km apart to the halfway mark and 2km thereafter.

Drinking Water
Drinking water will be provided throughout the race in 100 ml plastic sachets (Booster Bags), while Coca-Cola will be served in paper cups. In addition, potatoes, bananas, chocolates, jelly sweets and other 'morale lifters' will be available at some stations.

Medical Advice
Medical advice is that runners should drink approximately 100 ml of fluid (one sachet) every 15 minutes. It may thus not be necessary to drink at every station, as the dangers of over-hydration can be as severe as those of dehydration. Runners should modify their fluid intake to suit weather conditions on the day and should not experiment with new drinks on race day.

We appeal to you to keep our town and surrounding area clean. Don't throw bottles and sachets down any inaccessible places, rather use the collection boxes provided along the entire route.

In the interest of conservation all the plastic used on the route will be collected and recycled, as will the cans and bottles used on the grounds.

Many volunteers and helpers spend many hours cleaning the route after the race and your co-operation is requested to keep the Dam in shape!

Hints and Tips
A few important tips and hints from the medical tent:
  • If in any doubt about your health, consult your personal doctor before the race.
  • If you have had influenza or Diarrhea in the week before the race PLEASE visit your doctor or the race doctor before running. Don't take a chance with your health!
  • IMPORTANT! Please fill in the details on your race number.
  • Watch your fluid intake. Ensure you drink enough while running "drink to your thirst", and keep cool if it is a hot day.
  • Avoid discomfort by putting plasters on nipples, and Vaseline on areas that chafe BEFORE the race. Painkillers are NOT available during the race, for your own safety. Analgesics such as Panado/Nurofen can cause serious complications such as dehydration, and can even lead to renal failure. We recommend you do not take any painkillers prior to or during the race, for your own safety.

Cut-off

The race is run from gun to gun

Cut-off is 7 hours (13:00)

Runners who have not reached the following marks in the times specified will not be allowed to continue:
25km at 09:30
42,2km at 12:00

If you do not reach the cut-off points within the required time, you will be asked to retire from the Race and leave the road. YOU MAY NOT CONTINUE RUNNING.

Athletes who fail to obey the race officials will be subject to disciplinary action and may be banned from participation in the Old Mutual Om die Dam Ultra Marathon in future. Transport will be provided at all the cut-off points to take the runners back to the Finish.

Results

Final results will be available at www.raceresults.co.za, www.oldmutual.org and www.omdiedamultra.co.za a couple of days after the race.

Club Tents

Access to the premises to offload club tents will only be allowed on Friday 14 March 2014. No entrance by car will be permitted on the morning of the race. Camping on the premises is prohibited.

Team Prizes
Club team prizes are based on the total combined times of the team members. It is incumbent on all clubs to notify the race organisers in writing of any of their athletes who are not eligible for team prizes.

Overall winner who breaks the course record (2:49:39) OR first woman who breaks the woman's course record (3:21:31).
